The Indianapolis World was a newspaper published in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was first known as the Indianapolis Colored World. You can find copies of this newspaper at the Library of Congress and in university collections.
History of the Newspaper
The Indianapolis Colored World newspaper started in 1884. This was a time when other important newspapers for the African American community were also being published in Indianapolis. These included the Indianapolis Leader, which began in 1879, and the Indianapolis Freeman, also started in 1884.
Some talented people worked on these newspapers. Edward C. Cooper helped publish the Freeman with special illustrated editions starting in 1888. Later, Gertrude Bustill Mossell, a writer and journalist, worked at the Indianapolis World in 1891 and 1892. John C. Baskett was also an editor for the paper.
