The Story of Insomnium
Insomnium has been making music for many years. They have released several albums and toured around the world.
Early Albums and Tours
On September 9, 2011, Insomnium released a music video. It was for their song "Through the Shadows." This song came from their 2011 album, One for Sorrow.
In November 2011, Insomnium went on their first big tour in Europe. Other bands like Before the Dawn and MyGRAIN joined them. In April 2012, Insomnium toured the U.K. They were the main support band for the British gothic metal group, Paradise Lost.
New Members and New Music
On September 19, 2013, Insomnium released a new song. It was called "Ephemeral." This song was from their 2014 album, Shadows of the Dying Sun. This was the first song to feature their new guitarist, Markus Vanhala. He joined the band in 2011, taking the place of Ville Vänni.
Their sixth studio album, Shadows of the Dying Sun, came out on April 29, 2014. The next day, they played a special show. They were guests at Epica's album release party in the Netherlands.
Concept Albums and Recent Releases
On May 19, 2016, Insomnium announced their seventh album. It was named Winter's Gate and came out on September 23. This album is special because it's a "concept album." This means it tells one long story. The album has only one very long song, lasting 40 minutes. It's about Vikings who try to find a mysterious island. The story is based on a short story written by Niilo Sevänen, the band's bassist and singer.
In 2019, the band announced their eighth album. It was called Heart Like a Grave and was released on October 4, 2019. With this album, guitarist Jani Liimatainen officially joined the band. He had been playing with them on tours since 2015.
Insomnium released a new collection of songs, called an EP, on September 17, 2021. It was titled Argent Moon. At the same time, they shared plans for their ninth album. This album, Anno 1696, was released on February 24, 2023. Like Winter's Gate, this album is also based on a short story by Niilo.
