Intermission facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

An intermission or interval is a short break during a performance. Think of it as a pause in the middle of a play, opera, or even some long movies. It gives everyone a chance to stretch their legs, grab a snack, or just relax before the show continues.

What is an Intermission?

An intermission is a planned break that happens in the middle of a performance. It's like a halftime show, but for plays and concerts! These breaks usually last about 15 to 20 minutes, but they can sometimes be longer, especially for very long shows.

Why Do We Need Intermissions?

Intermissions are important for several reasons:

  • For the Performers: Actors, musicians, and dancers work very hard. An intermission gives them time to rest, change costumes, or get ready for the next part of the show.
  • For the Audience: It's a chance for you to visit the restroom, buy drinks or snacks, or simply stand up and move around. Sitting still for a long time can be tiring!
  • For the Crew: Behind the scenes, stagehands might use this time to change the scenery, adjust lighting, or prepare props for the next act.

Where Do Intermissions Happen?

Intermissions are common in many types of performances and events.

Intermissions in Live Shows

  • Plays and Musicals: Most plays and musicals are divided into sections called acts. An intermission usually takes place between these acts. For example, a play might have Act One, then an intermission, and then Act Two.
  • Operas: Operas are often very long, sometimes lasting several hours. Because of this, some operas, especially those by composers like Richard Wagner, might even have two intermissions!
  • Concerts: Some classical music concerts or long pop concerts might also include an intermission.

Intermissions in Movies

While most modern movies don't have intermissions, they were very common in older films, especially long ones. Today, you might still find intermissions in very long films shown in special cinemas, or in some international films.

What Can You Do During a Break?

During an intermission, you can:

  • Walk around and stretch.
  • Buy popcorn, candy, or drinks from the concession stand.
  • Use the restroom.
  • Chat with your friends or family about the show so far.
  • Look at the program or playbill to learn more about the performers or the story.
