Inu-Yupiaq is a special dance group at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. They perform a unique mix of Iñupiaq and Yup’ik Eskimo motion dances. This group brings together different Alaska Native cultures through their performances.

The Inu-Yupiaq Dance Group started in 1995. It was created because there was a need for an Eskimo dancing group in Fairbanks. Native dance is a very important part of the Iñupiaq culture. Long ago, "song duels" were a traditional way for the Iñupiaq and St. Lawrence Island Yupik people to share stories and challenge each other through songs and dances.

What is Inu-Yupiaq Dance?

Inu-Yupiaq dance combines the styles of two main groups: the Iñupiaq and the Yup’ik Eskimo people. Both groups have rich traditions of storytelling through movement and music. The dances often tell stories about hunting, daily life, animals, and important events.

The Power of Storytelling Through Dance

Every dance and song performed by the Inu-Yupiaq group tells a story. These stories are passed down through generations. They help keep the history and traditions of Alaska Native cultures alive. Dancers use their whole bodies to show emotions and actions from the stories.

Music and Drums in Eskimo Songs

Eskimo songs are sung with voices and special circular drums. These drums are very important to the music. They can be made from natural materials like wood, ivory, or animal parts. Sometimes, modern materials like parachute fabric are used too.

How Iñupiaq Songs are Structured

Iñupiaq songs usually have two or three parts. The first part often starts with a soft drum beat. As the song continues, the drum beat might get stronger. Sometimes, the last part of a song is only the drum beat, with no voices singing. This creates a powerful rhythm for the dancers.

The Rhythm of Yup'ik Songs

Yup'ik songs are often a bit longer and more complex. They also tell stories through their structure. They have different sections that build on each other. Each section helps to move the story forward, combining voices and drum beats in unique ways.
