Who is Íŋyaŋ?
The First Spirit
Íŋyaŋ is considered the oldest and most powerful of all the spirits in Lakota beliefs. He was present in the vast emptiness before anything else existed. His power was immense, and he held the potential for all creation within himself.
Creating the World
Íŋyaŋ's first act of creation was to bring forth Makȟá-akáŋl, the Earth spirit. Makȟá-akáŋl became the second powerful spirit and was a part of Íŋyaŋ himself. This act of creation used up a lot of Íŋyaŋ's strength.
The Birth of Earth and Humans
After creating Makȟá, Íŋyaŋ felt very weak. He then created smaller versions of Makȟá and her partner, the Sky spirit. These tiny versions were the first humans. This final effort of creation made Íŋyaŋ even weaker.
Íŋyaŋ's Sacrifice
Creating the world and humans took a great toll on Íŋyaŋ. He became hard and lost his active power. His very essence transformed: his blood became the blue waters of the oceans and rivers, and also the vast blue sky above us. This story shows Íŋyaŋ's great sacrifice for the world.
What Íŋyaŋ Represents
Today, Íŋyaŋ represents the enduring strength and foundation of the Earth. He is seen in the rocks, mountains, water, and sky. His story teaches about the origins of the world and the deep connection between all living things and the natural elements around us.
