Ione Holt Grogan (born March 4, 1891 – died February 5, 1961) was an amazing American teacher, mathematician, and professor. She taught in schools in North Carolina and Georgia for 22 years. Later, she became a mathematics professor at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. She taught there from 1935 to 1958. Today, a dorm, a special living area, and a scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro are named after her. Ione Grogan also led the Reviewers Club, which was the oldest book club for women in North Carolina.

Early Life and Education

Ione Grogan was born on March 4, 1891, in Reidsville, North Carolina. Her parents were John Henry Grogan and Mary Alice Robertson. Her mother's family, the Robertsons, were one of the first families in Virginia. Ione had one brother, Frank Elmer Grogan.

She went to the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. She earned two degrees there. In 1913, she got a degree in English. In 1926, she earned a degree in mathematics. Later, in 1928, she received her master's degree in mathematics from Columbia University.

Teaching Career

After college, from 1913 through the 1920s, Ione Grogan taught English. She worked in elementary, middle, and high schools. These schools were in North Carolina and Georgia. She was a teacher for 22 years.

In 1935, she joined the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. She became a mathematics professor there. She also helped students living in the Coit and Weil dorms. She continued teaching until 1958. From 1945 to 1947, she was the president of the college's Alumnae Association. This group connects former students.

While living in Greensboro, Ione Grogan was very active in her community. She was a member of the North Carolina Democratic Party. She also joined the Greensboro League of Women Voters. This group works to help people vote and understand government. She was also the president of the Reviewers Club. This was the oldest literary club for women in North Carolina.

Legacy and Remembrance

Ione Grogan passed away on February 5, 1961. She was buried in Greenview Cemetery in Reidsville.

Her memory lives on at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The Ione Holt Grogan Scholarship helps students pay for college. Also, the Grogan Residence Hall and the Grogan Residential College are named after her.
