The gazeta was a special type of money used a long time ago on the Ionian Islands. These islands are located in Greece. The gazeta was first used in 1801. This was when the islands were under the protection of both the Russian and Ottoman empires. This period was known as the Septinsular Republic.

What Was the Gazeta Currency?

The gazeta was a coin that replaced an older type of money called the Venetian lira. One gazeta coin was worth two soldi, which was a smaller unit of money. People on the Ionian Islands continued to use the gazeta throughout the time of the Septinsular Republic.

How Did the Gazeta Change?

Later, the British took control of the Ionian Islands. When this happened, the gazeta coins were changed. They were marked with a special stamp to show their value in Turkish kuruş. This allowed them to still be used for a short time.

However, the gazeta was eventually replaced. In 1819, a new currency called the Ionian obol was introduced. This new money was used for the United States of the Ionian Islands, which was the name of the islands under British rule. So, the gazeta had a relatively short life as the main currency.
