Ionuț Popa (born April 17, 1953 – died June 25, 2020) was a well-known Romanian football player and coach. He was famous for leading many football teams, including UTA Arad, Bihor Oradea, and Politehnica Iași. He was a respected figure in Romanian football for many years.

Early Life and Playing Days

Ionuț Popa was born in Săvârșin, Romania. He started his football journey as a young player. From 1967 to 1971, he played for Politehnica Timișoara. After that, he played for several other clubs. Some of these teams included Unirea Sânnicolau Mare and Vagonul Arad. He played football until 1988 before he decided to focus on coaching.

His Coaching Journey

Ionuț Popa began his coaching career in 1985. He started with Victoria Ineu. Over the years, he coached many different teams. He was known for his dedication and passion for the game.

One of his most notable coaching roles was with Politehnica Iași. He became their coach in 2004. That year, he helped them get promoted to Liga I, which is Romania's top football league. He stayed with the team until January 2009. This made him one of the longest-serving coaches in the top league at that time. He left his job because the team faced money problems.

He also coached UTA Arad multiple times. He returned to lead the team in 2009 and again from 2018 to 2019. His career showed his strong connection to Romanian football.
