About Irene Hedlund
Irene Hedlund was born in Denmark on March 8, 1947. She studied art at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen. She finished her studies in 1982.
Her first published drawings were for a book called Rasmus og Hængekøjen. This book was written by Thøger Birkeland in 1981. Irene finished all the drawings for it in just one month!
In 1983, Irene wrote and illustrated her own book. It was called Evige Bjerg og de tre stærke kvinder. For this book, she took a whole year to make sure the drawings were perfect. The story is from Japan. Her pictures for it show bamboo, mountains, and old, twisty trees. She also added pretty frames around her drawings. This made them even more beautiful.
Helping Kids with Kindergarten
Irene also drew pictures for Klaus Rifbjerg's book, Da Oscar blev tosset (1990). This story is about a child's first time going to kindergarten. At first, it seems a bit scary. But then, the child starts to feel more comfortable. Irene's drawings help show how Oscar learns to fit in. Her art makes kindergarten look like a friendly place for kids. It helps children feel less worried about starting school.
Other Fun Books
Irene Hedlund has written and illustrated other great books too. One is Den grådige kat (The Greedy Cat, 1988). It's about a cat that eats absolutely everything! Another book is Den arrige kone (The Angry Wife, 1986). This story is about a pig farmer. He has to deal with his angry wife to live a happy life.
Learning to Read with Pictures
Irene had some trouble learning to read when she was young. Because of this, she wanted to help other kids. In 1991, she drew pictures for Lærke og Jeppe - året rundt. This book was written by her husband, Bent Faurby.
Her drawings in this book look a bit like comic strips. But the words are written like a regular book. This makes it really fun for young readers. The pictures help you understand the story. They point to the parts of the text that explain what's happening.
