Early Life and Photography Training
Irina Popova was born in Tver, Russia. She started studying and working with photography when she was 16 years old. She went to the School of Journalism at Tver State University. Later, she studied photography at FotoDepartament in St. Petersburg in 2007. From 2008 to 2010, she learned more about documentary photography and mixed media at the Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia.

In 2008, for a school assignment, Irina lived for two weeks with a young family in a small apartment in St. Petersburg. She wanted to show how love can exist even in challenging situations. She felt they focused too much on the difficult parts and not enough on the love she saw.
Her book, Another Family (2013), shares these photos. It also includes many notes and letters from her time working on the project. This helps readers understand her journey and thoughts.

Another interesting project by Popova is The Incomplete Princess Book (2016). For this book, she collected about 8,000 images. These were all pictures of other people named Irina Popova found on the social network Vkontakte. It's a unique way to explore identity and how people present themselves online.
