President of one of Guatemala’s two High Risk Court Tribunals | |
Iris Yassmin Barrios Aguilar is an important judge in Guatemala. She is the president of one of Guatemala’s special courts called the High Risk Court Tribunals. These courts handle very serious cases.
Judge Barrios was the main judge in a big trial involving Efraín Ríos Montt. He was a former leader of Guatemala. In 2013, he was found responsible for serious actions against the Ixil Mayan people. This trial was very important because it was the first time a country's own court tried a former leader for such serious crimes. However, the court's decision was later changed, and the trial had to be restarted.
A Special Award
Iris Yassmin Barrios Aguilar was recognized for her bravery and work. She received the International Women of Courage award in 2014. This award honors women around the world who show great courage and leadership in working for justice and human rights.
Protecting Judges
Judge Barrios is one of three judges, along with Gloria Porras and Erika Aifan, who have received special support from an international court. This court, called the Inter-American Court on Human Rights, has ordered that these judges should be given extra protection. This is because their work can be very challenging and sometimes risky. Erika Aifan also received the International Women of Courage award in 2021.
