Irvin Woodberry Brooks, often called "Irvin" or "Irving" during his baseball days, was a talented American baseball player. He played in the Negro Leagues, which were professional baseball leagues for African American players. These leagues were important before major league baseball was integrated. Irvin was born in Key West, Florida, on June 5, 1891.
Some books mistakenly call him "Chester" Brooks and say he was from the Bahamas. But his real name was Irvin, and he was from Florida! From 1918 to 1933, he played many positions, including pitcher, infielder, and outfielder.
Playing Baseball in the Negro Leagues
Irvin Brooks spent his entire career playing for one team, the Brooklyn Royal Giants. He was a fantastic hitter, meaning he was very good at batting the ball.
A famous baseball owner named Cumberland Posey, who owned the Homestead Grays, thought Irvin was one of the best. Posey even picked Irvin Brooks for his special "all-time Negro league baseball all-star team." This means he believed Irvin was one of the greatest players ever in the Negro Leagues.
