Iryna Gurevych, a leading computer scientist.

Iryna Gurevych (born March 16, 1976, in Vinnytsia, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian computer scientist. She is a professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany. She also leads a special research group there called the Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing Lab.

Her Journey and Work

Iryna Gurevych started her studies in English and German Linguistics. She earned her first degree from the Vinnytsia State Pedagogical University in 1998. Later, in 2001, she earned her Ph.D. (a high-level university degree) in Computational Linguistics from the University of Duisburg-Essen.

From 2001 to 2005, she worked as a researcher at the European Media Lab and EML Research. After that, she joined the Technical University of Darmstadt in 2005. There, she focused on E-learning, which is about using technology for education.

In 2007, Iryna Gurevych started her own research group. It's called "Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing" (UKP Lab). This group focuses on how computers can understand and process human language. In 2008, she became a special professor, and since 2009, she has held a full professorship for Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing.

Since 2014, she has helped lead a center that uses digital tools for research in humanities and social sciences. The next year, she started another research group called AIPHES. This group works on preparing information from many different sources.

In 2020, Iryna Gurevych became the director of CA-SG. This is a research project that uses "Content Analytics for the Social Good." It means they use computer analysis to help society. She also helps lead the Natural Language Processing (NLP) program for ELLIS. This is a big European network for machine learning.

In 2020, she was recognized as a Fellow by the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). This award is for her amazing work in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning. In 2021, she became the Vice-president-elect of the ACL. She will become the president of this important international organization in 2023.

In March 2021, Iryna Gurevych received the first LOEWE-professorship. This is a special award from a research funding program in Germany. Her research focuses on how computers can understand human language (Natural Language Processing). She also works on Machine Learning, which is how computers learn from data. Other interests include analyzing different types of data, using digital tools for humanities, and studying social science with computers.
