Isaac López Mendizabal's Life and Work

Isaac López Mendizabal was a smart and active person. He earned special degrees in Philosophy, Letters, Law, and Business Sciences from the University of Deusto. This showed he loved learning about many different subjects!

Leading the Basque Nationalist Party

Isaac López Mendizabal was a key leader in the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV). This political party works to support the Basque people and their culture. From 1931 to 1935, he was the president of the PNV's main group, called the Euzkadi Buru Batzar (EBB). He also served as a councilor in his hometown in 1931.

Life in Exile and Publishing

During a difficult time in Spain, when the Basque Country was taken over by Francoist forces, Isaac López Mendizabal had to leave his home. He went to France to stay safe. Sadly, his personal library, full of books, was destroyed during this time.

Later, he moved to Argentina. There, he started a publishing company called Ekin with a friend, Andrés de Irujo. He also taught Law at the University of Buenos Aires. In 1965, he returned to Spain and started his own printing business.

Supporting the Basque Language

Isaac López Mendizabal was a big supporter of the Euskera, which is the language of the Basque people. He was part of the group that created the Royal Academy of the Basque Language. He also wrote and published many books to help people learn Euskera, including dictionaries and guidebooks. His work helped keep the Basque language alive and strong.
