Isabel Douglas, Countess of Mar facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Isabel Douglas, Countess of Mar (around 1360–1408) was a powerful noblewoman who ruled the lands of Mar in Scotland.

Isabel was the sister of James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas, a famous Scottish leader. James died in battle at Battle of Otterburn without any children. Because of this, Isabel inherited most of his property. She did not inherit the Douglas family lands, as those could only pass to male relatives. After she was confirmed as Countess, Isabel became a very sought-after bride. She soon married Sir Malcolm Drummond, who was related to King Robert III. However, they did not have any children. This made Isabel a target for other nobles who wanted to take her lands unfairly.

Isabel Douglas: A Powerful Countess

Family and Inheritance

Isabel Douglas was born around 1360. Her brother, James Douglas, was a brave warrior and a powerful Earl. When he died in 1388, Isabel became the rightful owner of the Earldom of Mar. This made her one of the most important and wealthy women in Scotland. Her lands included Kildrummy Castle, a very strong fortress.

Marriage and Challenges

Isabel married Sir Malcolm Drummond. He was a respected knight and a close advisor to King Robert III. Sir Malcolm often traveled for important royal duties. While he was away, Isabel faced many challenges. Other powerful nobles saw her wealth and tried to find ways to take control of her lands.

A Time of Trouble

The Capture of Sir Malcolm

In 1402, while Sir Malcolm was away from Kildrummy Castle, he was attacked. A group of highlanders, led by Alexander Stewart, captured him. Alexander was the son of a powerful noble known as the Wolf of Badenoch. Sir Malcolm was taken prisoner and later died while in captivity.

Isabel's Difficult Choices

At this time, King Robert III was sick and weak. Real power was held by his younger brother, the Duke of Albany. The Duke of Albany was also Alexander Stewart's uncle. This meant Alexander was protected and would not be punished for his actions.

In the summer of 1404, Alexander Stewart and his men attacked Kildrummy Castle. They captured Isabel and forced her to sign a document. This paper said she would marry Alexander and give him all her lands, including the Earldom of Mar. Isabel had no choice but to agree. She was forced to marry the man who had captured her husband and taken her lands. She lived the last four years of her life under his control.

Legacy of Mar

Isabel Douglas died in 1408 without any children. After her death, the Earldom of Mar went back to the Scottish Crown. Later, it was given to John Erskine, 6th Lord Erskine. His family still holds the title of Earl of Mar today.
