Isabella MacDuff, Countess of Fife (born around 1320, died 1389) was an important Scottish noblewoman. She held the title of Countess of Fife from 1363 until 1371, when she gave up the title.
Isabella was the only child of Duncan, Earl of Fife, and his wife Mary de Monthermer. Her mother was the daughter of Ralph, Lord Monthermer and Joan of Acre.
In the 1300s, it was common for noblewomen to inherit important titles and lands. This happened often because of wars or diseases like the plague, which reduced the number of men. Women like Isabella could become very powerful, owning land, wealth, and having a say in politics.
Early Life and Capture
Isabella was born sometime between 1320 and 1332. When she was young, Scotland was a busy place with many conflicts.
In 1332, when Isabella was still a child, she and her mother were captured in Perth. This happened during a time when supporters of Edward Balliol were fighting for control. After being captured, Isabella was sent to Northumberland, England, where she was looked after as a "ward." This meant she was under the care of someone else, often because she was an important heiress.
Marriages and Family
Isabella was married four times during her life. Each marriage was important for her status and connections.
Her first husband was Sir William Felton of Northumberland. They married around 1358, but he died soon after. They had three children together.
Before June 1361, Isabella married Walter Stewart, Lord of Fife. He was the second son of Robert Stewart, who later became King Robert II of Scotland. Walter died the next year, and they did not have any children.
In January 1363, she married Sir Thomas Bisset of Upsetlington. He passed away by April 1366.
Her fourth and final husband was John Dunbar. He died before 1371.
Countess of Fife
Isabella became the Countess of Fife in 1363. This was a very important position, giving her power and influence in Scotland.
However, on March 30, 1371, Isabella was persuaded to give up her title. She resigned the earldom to Robert Stewart, Earl of Menteith. Robert Stewart was her brother-in-law from her second marriage to Walter Stewart. He later became the Duke of Albany.
Isabella died shortly after August 12, 1389. She was buried next to her second husband, Walter Stewart.
