History of Isabella Court
Building Design and Opening
A talented architect named William Bordeaux designed Isabella Court. It was built between 1928 and 1929. The building was made in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. This means it has a classic look with a courtyard, a stucco (rough plaster) outside, and a red tile roof.
Isabella Court opened its doors in 1929. It was planned to be a "mixed-use" building. This means the ground floor was for shops and businesses. The two floors above had apartments where people could live.
Ownership and Recognition
In 1991, Trudy Hutchings bought the complex. A few years later, on June 24, 1994, Isabella Court was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historical places in the United States.
Many of the people who live and work in Isabella Court are involved in the arts. For a while, some businesses left the building. This happened during the construction of the METRORail Red Line nearby. But by 2007, all the business spaces were rented again. That same year, a local newspaper, Houston Press, gave the building an award for "Best Artistic Renovation."
Isabella Court is also featured in Houston's "Good Brick Tour." This tour highlights well-preserved historic buildings in the city.
