Isabella's story began in France in 1241. As a princess, her marriage was important for political reasons.

Getting Married to Theobald II

In 1254, Theobald II of Navarre, who was the King of Navarre, asked to marry Isabella. Her father, King Louis IX, wanted to make sure things were peaceful in Navarre first. He asked Theobald to make up with his sister, Blanche of Brittany.

Once Theobald and Blanche settled their differences, King Louis agreed to the marriage. Isabella and Theobald II were married on April 6, 1255, in a town called Melun. After their wedding, Isabella officially became the Queen consort of Navarre. She also became the Countess of Champagne, a region in France.

Journeying on the Eighth Crusade

Isabella was a very religious person. In July 1270, she traveled with her husband and her father, King Louis IX, on the Eighth Crusade. A crusade was a religious war during that time.

Sadly, her father, King Louis, died in August 1270 during the crusade. Just a few months later, in December, Isabella's husband, Theobald, also died. He passed away from an illness while they were in Sicily.

Returning to France

After losing both her father and her husband, Isabella returned to France. She lived in a region called Provence. However, she only lived for two more months after returning. Isabella died in April 1271, at the age of 30.

She was buried next to her husband in Provins, France.
