Isarn, Count of Pallars facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Isarn was a powerful leader who was the Count of Pallars from 920 until he died in 948. He was like a king in his own territory! Isarn was the oldest of four sons of Raymond I, who was also a count.

When his father died in 920, Isarn ruled Pallars with his younger brother, Lope. Their other brothers, Bernard and Miró, ruled a nearby area called Ribagorza. They also had a fifth brother, Otto, who was the Bishop of Pallars. This meant Isarn and his brothers had a lot of control over the Church in their lands.

Early Life and Capture

Isarn probably started helping his father rule Pallars around the year 900. But in 904, something big happened: he was captured! He was taken along with 700 other people during a raid by a Muslim lord named Llop ibn Muhammad from Lleida.

We know from an old book called the Códice de Roda that Isarn was held prisoner in a place called Tudela until 918. That's 14 years! He was finally set free by his cousin, King Sancho I of Pamplona.

Ruling as Count

After he became count, Isarn did many important things. He started a special religious house called a convent, named Sant Pere de Burgal, in a place called Burghals. In 945, he made his own daughter, Ermengardis, the first leader (called an abbess) of this convent.

Around that time, Isarn signed an important document. In it, he called himself "Lord Isarn, count and margrave, while residing in the kingdom of Pallars." This shows how important and powerful he was.

Isarn also had a son named William. William took over as count after Isarn died, but he didn't have any children, so the family line of rulers from Isarn ended there.
