Ivar Formo (born June 24, 1951 – died December 26, 2006) was a famous athlete from Norway. He was great at two different sports: cross-country skiing and orienteering. He competed in the 1970s and won many awards.

A Champion Athlete

Ivar Formo was a talented athlete who achieved a lot in his career. He was especially known for his success in cross-country skiing at the Winter Olympics.

Olympic Achievements

Ivar Formo won four medals at the Winter Olympics. This is a huge accomplishment!

  • At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan, he won a silver medal in the 4 × 10 km relay race. He also earned a bronze medal in the 15 km race.
  • At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, he won a gold medal in the 50 km race. He also got another silver medal in the 4 × 10 km relay.

World Championships Success

Ivar also did very well at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. These are big competitions for Nordic skiing.

  • He won two bronze medals in the 4 × 10 km relay. These were at the championships in 1974 and 1978.

Orienteering Skills

Besides skiing, Ivar Formo was also a skilled orienteer. Orienteering is a sport where you use a map and compass to find your way through unknown terrain.

Ivar Formo passed away on December 26, 2006. He was found in a lake called Store Sandungen in Nordmarka, which is a forest area near Oslo. He had been jogging and skating in the area. It is believed he accidentally fell through the ice. He is remembered by his two sons and his partner, Wenche Jacobsen.
