Early Life and Education
Ivory Torrey Thigpen Jr. was born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1978. He grew up and went to school there. He earned his first degree from Jackson State University. Later, he studied to become a doctor of chiropractic. He also studied religion to become a pastor.
His Work and Community Role
Mr. Thigpen is the pastor at Rehoboth Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina. He helps lead the church community. He also owns a chiropractic office with his wife. They work together to help people stay healthy.

Serving in the State House
Ivory Torrey Thigpen was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. He represented District 79. He served in this role from 2016 to 2024. In the House, he worked on important committees. These included the Judiciary and Rules committees.
In 2023, he led a group called the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus. This group works on issues important to African-American communities. He also attended the 2024 Democratic National Convention. He went as a delegate, representing his party.
Running for the State Senate
In 2024, Mr. Thigpen decided to run for a new political job. He wanted to become a member of the State Senate for District 22. The person holding that seat decided not to run again.
Other people also wanted this job. Two other candidates, Dr. Monica Elkins and Overture Walker, ran in the Democratic Primary election. A primary election helps a party choose its best candidate.
In June 2024, Mr. Thigpen and Overture Walker received the most votes. This meant they had to compete in a second election called a runoff. In the runoff election on June 25, Mr. Thigpen was not chosen. Overture Walker won the primary runoff.
