Ixhuatán is a town and a larger area called a municipality. It is located in the state of Chiapas, which is in southern Mexico.
About Ixhuatán
The word "municipality" means an area that includes a main town and the smaller villages or communities around it. Ixhuatán is both the name of the main town and the name of the whole municipality.
Population and Size
In 2010, the entire municipality of Ixhuatán had a total population of 10,239 people. This was an increase from 8,877 people in 2005. The municipality covers an area of about 72 square kilometers (about 28 square miles).
The town of Ixhuatán itself had a population of 3,621 people in 2010. Besides the main town, the municipality has 53 other smaller communities. The biggest of these communities in 2010 were:
- Ignacio Zaragoza (with 1,222 people)
- Chapayal Grande (with 1,112 people)
These smaller communities are mostly rural, meaning they are in the countryside rather than in a big city.
