Early Life and Acting Career
József Sas came from a family with a history in acting. His father, Izidor Polacsek, was also an actor known as Imre Sas. Sadly, his father died during World War II in 1944.
József finished drama school in 1957. After that, he started his acting journey. He joined several theatre groups across Hungary. These included the Kisfaludy Károly Theatre in Győr and the Békés County Jókai Theatre. He also performed with the National Theatre of Pécs and the Hungarian People's Army Art Ensemble. In 1966, he became a member of the Katona József Theatre in Kecskemét.
In 1973, József Sas joined the Mikroszkóp Theatre in Budapest. This theatre was very important for comedy in Hungary at the time. He became the director of this theatre in 1985 and led it until 2009. As director, he often appeared on radio and TV comedy shows. He also released several comedy albums and performed many solo shows.
