József Verebes (born March 23, 1941 – died March 13, 2016) was a famous Hungarian football manager and a former player. He was known for his smart strategies and for leading many teams to success in Hungary. People often called him the "Magician" because of his clever ways of coaching.

József Verebes: The Football Magician

József Verebes was born in Budapest, Hungary. He became a well-known figure in Hungarian football. He started his career as a player, but he truly made his mark as a coach.

His Start as a Player

Verebes played football for a short time in the early 1960s. He was a player for Ferencvárosi TC from 1961 to 1962. After playing, he decided to move into coaching, where he found his true calling.

Becoming a Manager

Verebes began his coaching journey in 1978 with Kecskemét. He then coached Sülysáp before becoming an assistant manager at Videoton in 1979. He quickly became the head coach of Videoton in 1980.

Coaching Top Teams

Verebes coached many important Hungarian football clubs. He was known for his unique style and for making teams play exciting football.

Leading Rába ETO

One of his most successful periods was with Rába ETO. He managed them from 1981 to 1986. During this time, he helped the team achieve great things. He even returned to coach Rába ETO again from 1993 to 1994. In 2011, he became an advisor for his former club, Győri ETO.

Managing MTK-VM

After his first time at Rába ETO, Verebes moved to MTK-VM. He coached them for a long period, from 1986 to 1992. This was another important part of his career.

Coaching the National Team

Verebes also had the honor of coaching the Hungarian national team. He was the manager in 1987 and again from 1993 to 1994. Leading your country's team is a big responsibility, and he took it on twice.

Throughout his career, Verebes managed several other notable clubs:

  • Vasas SC from 1994 to 1995
  • Diósgyőr in 1996
  • He also returned to Videoton for a second time from 1998 to 1999.
  • Later in his career, he coached Gödöllő in 2000, Vác from 2007 to 2008, and Nagytétény SE in 2009 and 2010. On October 15, 2010, he officially became the coach of Nagytétény SE, which played in the Budapest championship.

József Verebes passed away on March 13, 2016, leaving behind a great legacy in Hungarian football.
