His Work and Discoveries
James Hanauer worked with Charles Warren on an exciting trip. This trip was an "expedition" to a place called Transjordan. On this journey, James helped as a translator. He also worked as an assistant photographer.
This experience sparked his interest in old things and local stories. He loved learning about the "antiquities" (very old objects) and "folklore" (traditional stories and customs) of the area. This led him to join the Palestine Exploration Fund. This was a British group that studied the region.
Writing and Photography
James Hanauer wrote many articles and letters. These were published in a magazine called the Quarterly Statement. This magazine belonged to the British society he joined. In 1904, the society also released his small book. It was titled Table of the Christian and Mohammedan Eras.
He received excellent photography gear. This helped him take even better pictures. Many of his photos appeared in his 1910 book. It was called Walks about Jerusalem. His brother and son also enjoyed photography. In 1907, another important book by him came out. It was named Folk-lore of the Holy Land: Moslem, Christian and Jewish.
