The J.G. McDonald Chocolate Company Building is a historic four-story building in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was designed by John A. Headlund and finished in 1901. Originally, it was a three-story building made of brick and stone.

It quickly grew to four stories after it was built. The building kept getting bigger as the company expanded. In 1978, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it is part of the special Warehouse District in Salt Lake City.

A Sweet History: The Chocolate Factory

From Groceries to Candy

The story of this building starts with McDonald Brothers. This company was founded in 1863 by John T. McDonald. He was a wholesale grocer and also sold candy.

In 1883, John's son, James G. McDonald, became the company president. By 1890, the business focused mainly on candy. It was then known as James G. McDonald & Co. The company grew quickly. By 1899, they had 126 employees.

In 1900, the company officially became the J.G. McDonald Candy Co. Later, in 1912, its name changed again. It became the J.G. McDonald Chocolate Company.

Growing Bigger and Better

The J.G. McDonald Chocolate Company Building was built in 1901. This new location helped the company grow even more. They increased their number of workers to 400 people.

The building itself also got bigger over time. Major additions were made in 1912 and again in 1920. After the 1920 expansion, the building was very large. It could hold four different factory operations. This included making cardboard and wicker-basket boxes for their candies.
