J. Mahendran (born 25 July 1939 – died 2 April 2019) was a talented Indian movie director, screenwriter, and actor. He was very active in Tamil cinema, which means he made many films in the Tamil language. He is most famous for directing and writing the movies Mullum Malarum (1978), Uthiripookkal (1979), and Nenjathai Killathe (1980). His film Nenjathai Killathe even won a big award called the 1980 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.

J. Mahendran was born in a place called Ilaiyangudi, which was part of the Madras Presidency back then. His son, John Mahendran, also followed in his footsteps. John is now a movie director and screenwriter, working in both Tamil and Telugu cinema.
