How It Started
JJ Bean was started in 1996 by a person named John Neate Jr.. The very first JJ Bean coffee shops opened in Vancouver. One was at the famous Granville Island Market. The other was in Vancouver's Port Town. At the beginning, only 12 people worked for the company.
Growing the Business
JJ Bean grew steadily over the years. In 2016, the company decided to open coffee shops in Toronto, Ontario. This was a big step for them.
A few years later, in 2018, the minimum wage in Ontario went up. JJ Bean decided to give their staff in Vancouver the same higher wage. This showed they cared about their employees.
However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, things changed. JJ Bean had to stop its plans to open more shops in Ontario. All five of their Toronto locations closed down.

In 2019, JJ Bean reported sales of $26 million. They had about 350 employees working for them. As of 2022, JJ Bean has 23 coffee shop locations. All of these shops are located in Vancouver.
