Jackie Leven (born June 18, 1950 – died November 14, 2011) was a talented musician and songwriter from Scotland. He began his music journey in the late 1960s playing folk music. Later, he became well-known with the new wave band Doll by Doll. After that, Jackie released over twenty albums by himself. Sometimes he used his own name, and sometimes he used the secret name Sir Vincent Lone.

Life and Music Career

Jackie started making music in the late 1960s. For a while, he used the name John St Field. He recorded one album called Control in 1971. This album was first released only in Spain in 1973.

Doll by Doll and Solo Start

In 1977, Jackie formed a band called Doll by Doll. They released four albums between 1979 and 1982. After the band broke up in 1983, Jackie began his solo music career. He also worked with other musicians. These included former Doll by Doll members Joe Shaw and David Macintosh. He also teamed up with Glen Matlock from the band Sex Pistols. Together, they released a song called "Big Tears" in 1988. They called their group Concrete Bulletproof Invisible.

Returning to Music

In 1994, Jackie Leven started his solo career again. He released a mini-album called Songs from the Argyll Cycle. He also released a full album named The Mystery of Love is Greater than the Mystery of Death. He signed with a record company called Cooking Vinyl. His music style at this time was folk rock.

After this, he released fifteen more albums. One special album was called Jackie Leven Said. He made this album with crime writer Ian Rankin. He also worked with multi-instrumentalist Michael Cosgrave. Jackie also released some special live albums for his fans. These were available through his fan club and website.

The Sir Vincent Lone Story

In 2006, Jackie released an album called Songs For Lonely Americans. For this album, he used the name "Sir Vincent Lone". A year later, he recorded another Sir Vincent Lone album. It was called When The Bridegroom Comes (Songs For Women). This album was first sold only at his live shows. It became so popular that Cooking Vinyl later released it to everyone.

Jackie explained why he used the name "Sir Vincent Lone":

Some years ago I noticed that I was writing a lot more songs than I was ever going to record and get released, especially in these times where you can only release one studio album every eighteen months. As I am a writer of genius, this began to worry me more and more. So I went to see my Cooking Vinyl boss, Martin Goldschmidt, to ask him if I could make more records. He said no. I said to him 'look, The Beatles once released four albums in one year, and nobody said to them, hey that's too many records in one year'. Martin said 'Jackie, this is not 1967 and you are not The Beatles'. We talked some more and we agreed that I could make records under a different name – that name is Sir Vincent Lone.

Later Albums

Jackie's next album, Lovers at the Gun Club, came out in 2008. In 2009, he released a third Sir Vincent Lone record called Troubadour Heart. He also released four parts of The Haunted Year under his own name. These were collections of eight albums he had released earlier. Gothic Road was released in 2010. His last studio album came out in September 2011. It was called Wayside Shrines and the Code of the Travelling Man. He made this album with Michael Cosgrave. Jackie passed away two months after its release.

Death

Jackie Leven died on November 14, 2011. He was 61 years old. He passed away from cancer. Jackie was scheduled to perform at the Green Hotel in Kinross on November 18, just a few days after he died.
