Jacquelien Scherpen facts for kids
Jacquelien Maria Aleida Scherpen is a smart Dutch scientist. She is an expert in a field called nonlinear control theory. This is a special type of math used to make complex systems work smoothly. She is a professor at the University of Groningen. She also leads the Groningen Engineering Center. Since September 2023, she has been the rector magnificus of the university. This means she is the main leader of the university.
Her Journey in Science
Jacquelien Scherpen started her studies at the University of Twente. She studied applied mathematics there. She earned her master's degree in 1990. Then, she completed her Ph.D. in 1994. Her Ph.D. project was about "Balancing for Nonlinear Systems."
After her studies, she worked at the Delft University of Technology. She was there from 1994 until 2006. In 2006, she moved to the University of Groningen. She became a professor there. From 2013 to 2019, she was a director at ENTEG. This is an institute for engineering and technology. Since 2016, she has led the Groningen Engineering Center.
On September 1, 2023, she took on a very important role. She became the rector magnificus of the university. She followed Cisca Wijmenga in this position.
Awards and Honors
Jacquelien Scherpen has received many honors for her work. In 2021, she was named an IEEE Fellow. This is a special title given to top engineers and scientists. She earned it for her work on making complex systems simpler and easier to control.
She is also a knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. This is a high honor from the Netherlands. In 2022, she was chosen to lead a group called SIAM SIAG/CST. This group focuses on control and systems theory.
