About Jacqueline Kelly
Jacqueline Kelly was born in New Zealand. When she was a child, her family moved to Canada, and later to Texas in the United States. She studied a lot and earned degrees in both law and medicine. Even today, she still works as a doctor in Austin, Texas, alongside her writing career.
Her Books and Stories
Jacqueline Kelly's first published story appeared in a magazine called Mississippi Review in 2001. This was the start of her writing journey.
The Calpurnia Tate Series
Her first novel, The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, was published in 2009. This book tells the story of a young girl named Calpurnia Tate. She lives in Texas in 1899. The story shows Calpurnia learning about science and nature from her grandfather. It also explores what it was like to grow up as a girl at that time. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate was very popular. It was even named a Newbery Honor Book, which means it was a runner-up for the important Newbery Medal. A second book about Calpurnia, called The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate, came out in 2015. It also received great reviews.
Other Books
Jacqueline Kelly has also written a sequel to the classic book The Wind in the Willows. Her book is called Return to the Willows and was published in October 2012. For younger readers, she created a series of chapter books. These books are called Calpurnia Tate / Girl Vet. They continue the adventures of Calpurnia Tate in a simpler way.
Books Becoming Plays
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate was turned into a musical play. Omri Schein and Daniel Lincoln created this musical. It first opened at the Lamb's Player Theatre in San Diego in 2024. The play was very well-liked by critics and audiences.
