Life of a French General
Early Military Career
Jacques Bernard d'Anselme became a knight of Saint Louis on 18 April 1770. This was a special award for brave officers in the French army. He served as a lieutenant colonel in the Regiment of Soissons. This was during the American Revolutionary War, where France helped the American colonies.
Leading the Army
Later, as a lieutenant general, d'Anselme led his troops to victory. In 1792, he captured the city of Nice. He also took over important forts like Mont Alban and Villefranche-sur-Mer. These were big wins for France.
Challenges and Recognition
However, not all battles were easy. He faced a defeat at Sospello. After this, he was put out of command for a period. Despite these difficulties, he continued to serve France. His military achievements were remembered. That is why his name is proudly carved on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. This monument honors many great French military leaders.
