Chile's Land Reform
In 1965, Chile was going through a major change called the Chilean land reform. This was a plan to change how land was owned and used in the country. President Eduardo Frei Montalva asked Jacques Chonchol to lead the Institute for Agricultural Development (INDAP). This organization helped farmers and worked on land issues.
Chonchol helped INDAP become more focused on helping small farmers directly. He wanted to make sure the land reform happened faster. Because he felt it was moving too slowly, he left INDAP in 1968. In 1969, he helped start a new political group called the Popular Unitary Action Movement (MAPU).
In 1970, President Salvador Allende chose Chonchol to be the Minister of Agriculture. In this role, he was in charge of farming and land policies for the whole country. He held this important job until 1972.
