He works at the University Hospital in Strasbourg, France. Dr. Marescaux is known for being a pioneer in using new technologies for surgery, like operating with robots from far away.

Life and Career

Jacques Marescaux was born in Clermont, France, in 1948. He was a very bright student.

  • 1971: He did very well in a big national exam for medical students.
  • 1977: He became a doctor in surgery.
  • 1980: At just 33 years old, he became a full professor of digestive surgery at the university. This was a very important achievement.
  • Since 1989: He has been the head of digestive and endocrine surgery at the University Hospitals of Strasbourg. This means he leads the team that performs these types of operations.
  • Since 1994: He founded two important centers: IRCAD and EITS. These centers help teach surgeons from all over the world how to use new, less invasive surgery methods.

Amazing Surgical Firsts

Dr. Marescaux is famous for two incredible surgeries that changed medicine.

The Lindbergh Operation

On September 7, 2001, Dr. Marescaux made history with a surgery called the Lindbergh Operation. He performed a gallbladder operation on a patient in Strasbourg, France. But here's the amazing part: Dr. Marescaux was in New York City, thousands of miles away! He used a special robot and a fast internet connection to control the surgical tools. This was the first time a surgeon had operated on someone from such a long distance. It showed the world that "telesurgery" was possible.

Scarless Surgery

On April 2, 2007, Dr. Marescaux achieved another world first. He operated on a patient's gallbladder without making any cuts on the skin. Instead, he removed the gallbladder through a natural opening in the body. This meant the patient had no visible scar from the surgery. This new method was a big step forward in making operations less invasive.

Other Contributions

  • Since 2002: He helped create WeBSurg. This is an online platform that shares surgical knowledge and videos with doctors around the world.
  • 2005: He worked with other famous scientists to create a project called "Innovation Therapeutics." This project aimed to develop new medical treatments.

Jacques Marescaux has truly changed the way doctors think about surgery. He continues to inspire new generations of surgeons.
