Jacques Martin (born June 22, 1933 – died September 14, 2007) was a famous French television host and producer. He was known for creating popular TV shows and for his ability to work well with children. Many people remember him for his Sunday afternoon programs.

A Look at His Life and Career

Jacques Martin was born in Lyon, France. He started his career in radio in the late 1960s. He formed a funny duo with French actor Jean Yanne on the radio station Europe 1. They made many listeners laugh.

In the early 1970s, Jacques Martin moved to television. He became a sidekick to Danièle Gilbert on the show Midi Première. He then created and hosted his own very popular shows. These included Le Petit Rapporteur (which means "The Little Snitch") and La Lorgnette ("The Opera Glasses"). These shows were known for being satirical, meaning they used humor to comment on current events and society.

Jacques Martin also tried acting and directing films. He wrote and directed a movie called Na ! in 1973. He also acted in other films, like La Passante du Sans-Souci. However, his biggest successes were always in television.

He loved operetta, which is a type of light opera with spoken dialogue. He enjoyed hosting TV shows that mixed popular and classical music. One such show was Musique and music. During these shows, he would often sing operetta songs himself.

Discovering New Talent

Jacques Martin was very good at finding new talented people. Many future stars got their start on his shows. Some of these included Pierre Desproges, Stéphane Collaro, Laurent Ruquier, and Laurent Gerra. He also had a knack for coming up with fresh ideas for TV shows.

His most famous creations were Le Petit Rapporteur and L'École des Fans. L'École des Fans ("The School of Fans") was especially popular. This was because Jacques Martin was excellent at talking to and interacting with young children on television.

A famous singer, Vanessa Paradis, made her first TV appearance on L'École des Fans. She was only 7 years old at the time, in 1980.

Jacques Martin was also a regular guest on the radio show Les Grosses Têtes. He admired the French writer and filmmaker Sacha Guitry. He often quoted Guitry and tried to copy his style.

Until 1998, Jacques Martin hosted an entire afternoon of Sunday television on France 2. This long show was called Dimanche Martin.

His Later Years and Passing

Jacques Martin passed away on September 14, 2007, at the age of 74. He died from cancer in Biarritz, France. He is buried in the Guillotière Cemetery in Lyon, his hometown.

His Family Life

Jacques Martin was married and divorced twice. His second wife, Cécilia Ciganer-Albéniz, later became the wife of French president Nicolas Sarkozy. She was France's First Lady.

Jacques Martin had eight children in total from four different women. All of his children survived him.

  • With his first wife, Anne Lefèvre, he had two children: David Martin, who became a cook and TV host, and Élise Martin.
