James Allen Ransome (born July 6, 1806 – died August 29, 1875) was an important English inventor and writer. He was famous for making tools and machines for farming. People knew him as Allen Ransome. His book, The Implements of Agriculture, came out in 1843. He helped change farming a lot by using engineering to build better farm tools. This made farming much easier and more efficient.

About His Life
James Allen Ransome was born in 1806 in Great Yarmouth, England. He was the oldest son of James Ransome, who also made farm tools. His grandfather, Robert Ransome, helped start a big company called Ransomes, Sims & Jefferies.
In 1809, James moved with his family to Ipswich. He finished school in Colchester in 1820.
Starting His Career
After school, James became an apprentice. He learned the family business from his grandfather, father, and uncle. Their company was called Ransome and Sons.
From 1826 to 1839, he lived in Yoxford, Suffolk. He managed a part of the family business there. He also started a club for farmers in Yoxford. This club was one of the first of its kind. It led to many similar groups, like the important Farmers' Club of London. James was one of the people who helped start the London club.
In 1829, he became a partner in the family business. The company's name changed to J. R. and A. Ransome. He also got married that year.
Leading the Business
In 1839, James moved back to Ipswich for good. He became one of the main leaders of the company, which was then called Ransomes and Sims. Under his leadership, the business grew much bigger.
In 1843, he wrote an excellent book called The Implements of Agriculture. Part of this book was first written as an essay. It won a prize from the Royal Agricultural Society.
James joined the Royal Agricultural Society in 1838. He was on its council and was very popular at their yearly shows. From 1865 until he passed away in 1875, he was an alderman in Ipswich. An alderman was a senior member of the local government.
James Ransome died on April 29, 1875, at his home in Ipswich. He had two sons, Robert James and Allen Ransome, and three daughters. One of his daughters married J. R. Jefferies, who was also an important part of the family business.
His Role in Local Government
Allen Ransome was a Councillor for the Ipswich Corporation. This meant he helped make decisions for the local government of Ipswich.
