James Bartholomew Radclyffe, the 4th Earl of Newburgh, was an important British nobleman. He also held the title of 6th Earl of Derwentwater. He was born on August 23, 1725, and passed away on January 2, 1787.
Early Life and Family
James Bartholomew Radclyffe was born into a noble family. His father was Charles Radclyffe. Charles was known as the 5th Earl of Derwentwater. However, this title was only "titular." This means he had the name but not the full rights. This was because his older brother had lost his rights to the title earlier.
James's mother was Charlotte Maria Livingston. She was the 3rd Countess of Newburgh. James inherited his titles from both sides of his family.
A Time of Change: The Jacobite Rising
During James's younger years, there was a big event in Britain. It was called the Jacobite rising of 1745. This was a conflict where people tried to bring back the old royal family to the throne.
James and his father were involved in this uprising. They were captured during the events. However, James was released quite quickly. Sadly, his father faced a severe punishment. He was executed on December 8, 1746.
Family Life
On November 11, 1749, James Bartholomew Radclyffe married Barbara Kemp. They started a family together. They had two children:
- Anthony James Radclyffe, who later became the 5th Earl of Newburgh (1757–1814)
- Lady Anne Radclyffe (c. 1758–1785)
James Bartholomew Radclyffe lived until 1787. He died on January 2 of that year.
