James Bradshaw (minister) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

James Bradshaw (born around 1636 – died 1702) was an English minister who lived a long time ago. He is remembered as an "ejected minister," which means he was forced to leave his church job because of his beliefs.

Life of James Bradshaw

James Bradshaw came from a well-known family in Haigh, near Wigan, England. His family supported the King during a time of political change. He was born in Hacken, a small place near Bolton, around 1636.

He went to Bolton grammar school and then to Corpus Christi College, Oxford. However, he did not finish his degree there. Instead, he studied religion with his uncle, William Holmes, who was also a minister.

After his studies, James Bradshaw became a minister in Hindley, Lancashire. He was involved in a rebellion that supported the King, led by Sir George Booth.

Ejected from his Church

In 1662, James Bradshaw was "ejected." This meant he was forced to leave his position as a minister. Even after being ejected, he continued to preach. Because of this, he was put in prison for several months. This happened because a relative, Sir Roger Bradshaw, who was a judge and supported the official Church of England, had him arrested.

Preaching After Ejection

Later, in 1672, a special law called the "Declaration of Indulgence" was passed. This law allowed some ministers, like Bradshaw, to preach again. James Bradshaw then began preaching at Rainford Chapel.

Other local ministers sometimes preached for him and used the official prayer book. This helped Bradshaw avoid trouble with the authorities. The bishop of Chester, John Pearson, was also understanding and did not cause problems for peaceful ministers. Bradshaw also gave lectures on Mondays in Bolton.

James Bradshaw passed away in Rainford in 1702. He was about 66 years old. His death happened after an accident while he was riding to preach. His son, Ebenezer, also became a minister.

James Bradshaw wrote some books, which were collections of his sermons. Sermons are speeches given during religious services.
