James Buchan (born April 19, 1881 – died 1950) was a Scottish professional football player. He was best known for playing as a wing half (a type of midfielder) for seven years with Manchester City in England.
He also played for other teams in England and Scotland. These included Woolwich Arsenal, St Johnstone, Hibernian, Motherwell, Kilmarnock, and Forfar Athletic. After he stopped playing, Buchan became a manager for St Johnstone.

Football Career
James Buchan started his football journey as a wing half. This position is like a midfielder who plays on the side of the field. He began with his hometown club, St Johnstone.
Playing for Hibernian
In 1902, Buchan joined Hibernian, a team in the top Scottish league. In his first year, he helped Hibernian win the First Division title in 1903. He stayed with Hibernian until April 1904.
Moving to England
After his time at Hibernian, Buchan moved to England. He joined Woolwich Arsenal, a team that had just been promoted to the top English league. He played eight games for them in the 1904–05 season.
In March 1905, he moved to another big English club, Manchester City. Buchan played for Manchester City for seven years.
Success with Manchester City
During his time at Manchester City, the team faced a tough moment. They were moved down to the Second Division at the end of the 1908–09 season. However, Buchan helped them bounce back quickly. They won promotion back to the top league in the 1909–10 season.
Later Career and Management
After the 1910–11 season, Buchan returned to Scotland. He played for Motherwell, Kilmarnock, and Forfar Athletic. He also had a second period playing for St Johnstone.
Later, James Buchan became the manager for St Johnstone. He managed the team from 1920 to 1922.
Personal Life
During the First World War, James Buchan joined the army. On December 8, 1915, he became a reserve soldier in the Highland Light Infantry. He officially started his service on August 28, 1916.
A few days later, he moved to the Army Pay Corps. This part of the army handles payments for soldiers. In September 1917, he transferred again to the Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick's Own) Yeomanry. He served with them until March 1919, when he returned to the army reserve.
