Sir James Edward Colebrooke, 1st Baronet (born July 21, 1722 – died May 10, 1761) was an important person in British politics. He was a member of the House of Commons from 1751 to 1761. The House of Commons is like a big meeting place where elected officials make laws for the country.

Early Life and Family

James Edward Colebrooke was the son of James Colebrooke. His father was a very successful banker in London. His mother's name was Mary Hudson.

James and his brother, George, studied at Leiden University in the Netherlands. After returning to Britain, James married Mary Skynner in May 1747. Mary was the daughter of Stephen Skynner.

Political Career

Soon after his marriage, James Colebrooke bought a place called Gatton Park. This purchase was very important because it came with the right to control the local area of Gatton. This meant he could choose two people to represent Gatton in the House of Commons.

Sir James used this power himself. He became a member of the House of Commons and served there for ten years, from 1751 to 1761.

In 1759, he received a special honor. He was made a Knight and then the 1st Baronet Colebrooke of Gatton. A "Baronet" is a title of honor that can be passed down in a family. His title was set up so that if he had no sons, it would pass to his brother, George.

Sir James had two daughters. One was Emma, Lady Tankerville, who became known for studying plants. His other daughter, Mary (1750–1781), married Sir John Aubrey, 6th Baronet. When Sir James died in 1761, his special title and Gatton Park went to his brother, George.
