Life of Sir James Colville
Sir James Colville was the older son of Robert Colville and Margaret Logan. He became a key figure in the Scottish government.
Early Career and Royal Service
Around 1525, James Colville was appointed the Comptroller of Scotland. This important job meant he managed the king's money. He was in charge of the household spending for King James V. He also served as a representative in the Scottish parliament.
In 1529, Sir James traded some of his family's land for new estates in Fifeshire. That same year, he became a director in the government's record office. He continued to be an active member of parliament, helping to make important decisions for the country. He even helped decide on taxes to support King James V's upcoming marriage.
Becoming a Judge and Diplomat
In 1532, a new court system called the College of Justice was created. Sir James Colville was chosen to be one of its first judges. This was a great honor, and he was also knighted. He also worked as a diplomat, representing Scotland in peace talks with England in 1533 and 1534.
Challenges and Later Life
Later, Sir James faced difficulties. He lost his job as Comptroller in 1538. He was also accused of being disloyal to the king. This was because he was thought to have helped members of the Douglas family, who were out of favor with the king.
In 1539, he was called to answer these charges in parliament. He was ordered to stay at Blackness Castle as punishment. However, he did not follow this order. He went to England and continued to associate with the Douglas family.
Sir James Colville passed away in 1540. After his death, his family faced legal issues because of the accusations against him. His property was taken by the crown for a short time. However, this decision was later reversed in 1543, and his family got their property back.
