James Cuffe, 1st Baron Tyrawley (born 1747 – died 15 June 1821) was an important Irish politician and a member of the nobility. He held a special title called "Baron," which meant he was a peer in Ireland.

Early Life and Family Background

James Cuffe was born in 1747. His father was also named James Cuffe, and he owned large estates like Elmhall and Ballinrobe Castle. His mother was Elizabeth Gore. Her family was also well-known in Ireland.

A Career in Irish Politics

James Cuffe spent many years serving in the Irish House of Commons. This was like the parliament or main law-making body for Ireland at the time.

Representing County Mayo

From 1768 to 1797, James Cuffe was a representative for County Mayo. This meant people in County Mayo voted for him to speak for them in the Irish House of Commons. He was their voice in important decisions.

Becoming a Baron and Peer

In 1797, James Cuffe received a special honor. He was given the title of Baron and became the 1st Baron Tyrawley. This made him a member of the Peerage of Ireland, which is a group of people with special noble titles.

After Ireland joined with Great Britain in 1800, he was chosen as one of the first representative peers for Ireland. This meant he represented Ireland in the British Parliament, even though he was an Irish peer.

Governor of Mayo

Besides his work in parliament, James Cuffe also served as the Governor of Mayo. He held this important position until he passed away in 1821. As Governor, he was responsible for managing affairs and keeping order in County Mayo.

His Family and Legacy

Lord Tyrawley was married to Mary Levinge. She passed away in 1808. They did not have any children together.

He had two sons, Henry and James, from another relationship. Henry passed away in 1811. James Cuffe (his son) later became a Member of Parliament for Tralee.

Lord Tyrawley himself passed away on 15 June 1821. Because he did not have any legitimate sons who could inherit his title, the title of Baron Tyrawley ended with him.
