Sir James Donaldson (born December 10, 1751 – died December 16, 1830) was a Scottish printer and newspaper publisher. He is famous for leaving a large part of his money to create a special school. This school was called Donaldson's Hospital, which later became Donaldson's College.

Early Life in Scotland

James Donaldson was born in 1751 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Alexander Donaldson, was also a publisher. Alexander started a newspaper called the Edinburgh Advertiser. He was also a bookseller.

James's mother was Anna Marshall. James had younger brothers, but they all passed away when they were young.

A Career in Newspapers

When James was 22, he took over his father's newspaper, the Edinburgh Advertiser. This paper came out twice a week. His printing office was in a part of Edinburgh called Castlehill.

Many young people learned the printing trade from him. In 1820, James sold the newspaper. He sold it to Claud Muirhead, whose father had been the paper's main manager.

James was also a member of the Edinburgh Bookseller's Society. In 1782, he became a "Burgess and Guild Brother" of Edinburgh. This was an important title for citizens back then.

His Generous Legacy

James Donaldson married Jane Gillespie on September 29, 1792. Jane was the oldest daughter of Dr. Thomas Gillespie. James and Jane did not have any children.

James lived most of his life in Edinburgh. He owned two homes. One was in the city, and the other was in the countryside. He inherited a lot of money from his father, about £100,000. He then doubled this amount by investing wisely.

James was known for being very kind and generous. He would give money to people in need every week. He was also known for being a bit unusual or "eccentric."

James Donaldson passed away in 1830 at his country home. After he died, the garden at his home was turned into a zoo.

Donaldson's Hospital

James left a huge amount of money, £220,000, to start Donaldson's Hospital. This hospital was not just for sick people. It was a school and home for poor children. He especially wanted to help children named Donaldson or Marshall.

He is buried in the churchyard of St. John's Church in Edinburgh.
