Early Life and Education

James Fortescue was born in 1716 in Devon, England. His father, George Fortescue, was a respected gentleman from Milton Abbot. James began his studies at Exeter College, Oxford in 1732. This is where he started his university journey.

He worked hard and earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), in 1736. Soon after, he became a "fellow" of his college. This meant he was a senior member of the college, often involved in teaching or research. He then earned his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in 1739.

University Career

Fortescue held several important roles at Oxford University. He served as a chaplain at Merton College, Oxford in 1738, 1743, and 1746. A chaplain is a minister who serves a specific institution.

In 1748, he became the senior proctor of the university. This was a significant position, helping to maintain discipline and manage university affairs. He continued his studies, earning a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.) in 1749. He then received his Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) degree in 1751. This was the highest degree in theology.

Later Life and Ministry

In 1764, James Fortescue was appointed as the rector of Wootton, Northamptonshire. A rector is a priest in charge of a parish. This position was given by Exeter College, his old college. Because of this new role, he resigned his fellowship at the college the next year. He continued to serve as rector until he passed away in 1777.

James Fortescue's Poems and Writings

James Fortescue was a talented writer. He published several works, mostly poems and essays. These writings often explored moral ideas and different aspects of life.
