Who Was James Hamilton?
James Hamilton was the son of James Hamilton and Anne Mordaunt. His mother's father was a very important person, The 1st Viscount Mordaunt. James grew up in a family with strong connections to politics and nobility.
Starting His Political Journey
James Hamilton began his career in Ireland. He was elected to the Irish House of Commons, which was like the parliament for Ireland at the time. From 1715 to 1719, he represented the area of Dundalk. This was his first step into the world of making laws and governing.
Becoming a Nobleman
On May 13, 1719, James Hamilton received special titles from the King. He became Baron Clanboye and Viscount of the City of Limerick. These titles were part of the Peerage of Ireland. Being a "peer" meant he was a member of the nobility.
Because his titles were in the Irish peerage, it meant he could still be elected to the House of Commons of Great Britain. This was the main parliament for Great Britain.

James Hamilton served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Great Britain for many years.

His Family Life
James Hamilton married Lady Harriet Bentinck on October 15, 1728. Lady Harriet was the daughter of William Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland. They had two children together: a son named James and a daughter named Anne. Anne later married Robert Jocelyn, 1st Earl of Roden. When James Hamilton passed away, his only son, James Hamilton, took over his titles and responsibilities.
