Who Was Sir James Hayes?
Sir James Hayes was born in 1637 in a place called Beckington, in Somerset, England. He grew up to become a lawyer and a key figure in setting up trade routes in North America. His work helped England gain control over a large part of what is now Canada.
Early Life and Education
James Hayes was the son of James Hayes. He went to a good school in London called St Paul's School (London). After that, he studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford University in 1649. He also studied law at Lincoln's Inn, a famous law school, and became a lawyer in 1656.
A Career in Public Service
In 1659, Sir James Hayes was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Marlborough. An MP is a person elected to represent their area in the country's government. He also became the Recorder of Marlborough, which meant he was a legal official for the town.
In May 1663, he became one of the first members of the Royal Society. This was a very important group of scientists and thinkers in England.
Helping Start the Hudson's Bay Company
Sir James Hayes became the secretary to Prince Rupert. At this time, England and France were both trying to get control of the valuable natural resources in what is now Canada. These resources included animal furs, which were very popular in Europe.
Hayes had a big idea in 1668. He supported two French fur traders, Pierre-Esprit Radisson and Médard des Groseilliers. He helped them get money to start a British trading post on the shores of Hudson Bay. This was a very important step.
Under Sir James Hayes's guidance, this effort led to the creation of the Hudson's Bay Company in May 1672. This company was given special rights to trade in a huge area of North America. Sir James became the first Deputy-Governor of the company. Prince Rupert was the first Governor. For his important work, Sir James Hayes was made a knight in 1670.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1682, Sir James Hayes bought a large estate called Bedgebury Manor in Kent, England. He rebuilt the main house on the property.
He passed away in 1694. In 1664, he had married Rachel, who was the daughter of Anthony Hungerford. She was also the widow of Henry Cary, 4th Viscount Falkland. Sir James and Rachel had a daughter, also named Rachel. She later married Lord David Hay.
The Hayes River, which flows into Hudson Bay in Canada, was named after him in 1684. This shows how important his work was in exploring and trading in that region.
