James Henthorn (born in 1744, died on December 28, 1832) was a very important person in Irish medicine. He became the president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 1822. This college is a famous place where surgeons learn and train.

James Henthorn: A Key Figure in Irish Medicine

James Henthorn started his career as a surgeon. On December 7, he was chosen to be a surgeon at the House of Industry Hospitals. He was also a member of the Dublin Society of Surgeons. His name is even on the very first official document, called a charter, for the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. This charter was given in 1784.

His Important Roles

Many people believe that James Henthorn was one of the true founders of the RCSI. He worked alongside another important person named Dease. Henthorn also served as the Secretary for the College for a very long time. He held this important job for almost 49 years! He was also a surgeon at the Lock Hospital.

Helping Hospitals Grow

James Henthorn played a big part in building new hospitals. When he became a Governor of the House of Industry Hospitals, he helped convince the government to build three new hospitals. These were the Richmond, Hardwicke, and Fever Hospitals. Thanks to his efforts, more people could get medical care.

A Respected Leader

People described James Henthorn as a very kind and friendly person. He was known as a good companion and a warm-hearted friend. His contributions to medicine were highly valued. Today, you can see a large painting of James Henthorn at the College meeting room. This portrait, painted by an artist named Cregan, is one of only two full-sized portraits the College owns. It shows how much he was respected.
