Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir James Jeffreys (around 1650 – 1722) was an important soldier and politician. He was from both England and Ireland. Sir James served in the armies of two different kings: Charles XI of Sweden and William III of England. He eventually became a Brigadier General, which is a high rank in the army.

Early Life and Military Career

Born in England, James Jeffreys began his military journey in the Swedish Army. He likely took part in a major conflict called the Great Turkish War, fighting alongside other Swedish soldiers. During this time, he rose through the ranks and became a lieutenant-colonel.

In 1690, James decided to join the army of William III of England. The King of Sweden, Charles XI, even wrote a special letter praising James's bravery. After moving to London, James was made a colonel in the English army in May 1690.

Service in Ireland and Political Role

James Jeffreys played a part in the Williamite War in Ireland. In September 1690, he was given an important job: Governor of Duncannon Fort. This meant he was in charge of the fort.

Later, in 1698, he became the Governor of Cork, another key city in Ireland. This position helped him gain a lot of wealth. With his money, he was able to buy the famous Blarney Castle.

James continued to serve as Governor of Cork. He asked both Queen Anne and King George I to keep his position, which they did. He also received a good pension.

From 1703 to 1715, James Jeffreys was a Member of Parliament for Lismore in the Irish House of Commons. This meant he helped make laws for Ireland. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1704, and then to "brigadier general of all forces" in 1709.

Family Life

James Jeffreys married a Swedish woman named Katherine Drokenhellem. They had a son, also named James Jeffreys, who later became a diplomat.
