Who Was James Kirk?
James Kirk was a young man from Cheadle Hulme, a town in Cheshire, England. His parents were James and Rachel Kirk. He grew up like many other children in England at the time.
Early Life and Joining the Army
In 1915, when James Kirk was about 18 years old, he decided to join the army. He became a private soldier in a famous group called the Manchester Regiment. This was during World War I, a very big and important war.
After serving for some time, James showed great potential. In June 1918, he was promoted to a new role called a second lieutenant. This meant he became an officer and would lead other soldiers.
His Service in World War I
As a second lieutenant, James Kirk was part of the 10th Battalion of The Manchester Regiment. He was also attached to the 2nd Battalion, which means he worked with them. He was only 21 years old when he performed the brave actions that earned him the Victoria Cross. These actions happened during the final months of World War I.
