Sir James La Roche (born June 24, 1734 – died September 1804) was an important British figure. He was a politician and a successful businessman. James was the younger son of John Laroche, who was also a Member of Parliament.

Who Was Sir James La Roche?

Sir James La Roche was a prominent merchant from Bristol, a major port city in England. He held important positions in his community. For example, he was the Sheriff of Bristol from 1764 to 1765. This role was like being a chief law enforcement officer for the city.

His Business and Land

James La Roche was also a leader in the Society of Merchant Venturers. This was a group of important merchants in Bristol. He became a master of this society in 1782–83. This shows he was a respected and influential person in the city's trade.

In the mid-1700s, he bought a large, old house called Over Court. This was an Elizabethan mansion near Almondsbury, in Gloucestershire. Owning such a large estate showed his wealth and status.

His Time in Parliament

Sir James La Roche was also involved in politics. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bodmin. He was an MP from 1768 to 1780. Being an MP meant he helped make laws for the country.

In 1776, he was given a special honor. He was made a baronet. This is a hereditary title, like a knight, but it can be passed down in the family. His title was "Baronet, of Over in the Parish of Aldmondbury in the County of Gloucester."

The End of the Baronetcy

Sir James La Roche passed away in September 1804, when he was 70 years old. He had been married twice. He had one son from his second marriage. However, when he died, the baronetcy ended because his son did not survive him or did not have children to inherit the title.
